Rarely does an article so thoroughly reveal how our historical response to child abuse has failed to develop systems that adequately protect children.

Jill Le Pore’s article “Baby Doe – A political history of tragedy” in the February 1, 2016 New Yorker is an insightful look at the history of child welfare, the political calculations, and the economic decisions that have left many families without adequate resources and the child welfare system in crisis.  This history and discussion are important for the next generation of child protection.
